Motorway reveals continued, accelerated growth, achieving more than £750m in completed sales in the first six months of 2022

The used car marketplace sees a 200% uplift in YoY sales as motorists and dealers flock to platform to transact online

Motorway, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, today announced continued, accelerated business growth as record numbers of motorists sold their cars online through the platform in the first six months of 2022.

Between January and June 2022, Motorway achieved more than £750 million in completed sales, an uplift of almost 200% versus the same period in 2021.  June saw a record number of cars going into Motorway’s daily online sales, almost double the total on sale in January, with daily sales of over 1,000 vehicles a day. These figures demonstrate strong and growing consumer demand for a more efficient online way to sell a car, and that Motorway has become the go-to platform.

This rapid growth follows continued development of Motorway’s market-leading service for car sellers and dealers.  In H1 2022, the company launched its iOS and Android native photo apps, helping car sellers profile their vehicles more easily and accurately than ever before, and ensuring dealers have the best possible profiles on the condition of every vehicle for sale. The company has also started rolling out a range of personalisation tools and features on its dealer platform, to help dealers more quickly and easily find and buy the best stock for their needs.

Record stock levels, coupled with an ongoing focus on innovation to enhance the dealers’ experience and make the platform as simple and user-friendly as possible, has led to a marked increase in dealers signing up to use Motorway in the last six months, and participating in its daily sales. The number of verified dealers in Motorway’s nationwide network now exceeds 5,600 across franchised and independent dealerships, up from 3,000 in November 2021.

Tom Leathes, CEO of Motorway said:

“Motorway remains focused on building a new way to transact more efficiently online, and on delivering more value to both car sellers and dealers.  We don’t buy, hold or sell stock ourselves.  This means we continue to remain independent and transparent, and can grow sustainably while ensuring everyone gets the best deal possible. Our efficient online marketplace model offers something very different, and now that we’re hitting over 1,000 cars a day, I believe we are really beginning to change how the UK car market works.

“Our team works relentlessly to understand what our dealer partners need, and we are committed to providing an outstanding service – from delivering the highest quality selection of fresh cars for sale every day, to constant platform innovations making buying the UK’s best used car stock as easy as possible. You’ll see much more innovation from Motorway throughout the rest of the year and as we look to break more records and help our dealers’ businesses win.”

Motorway’s team has now grown to over 350 people in London, Brighton and around the world.  Its continued rapid growth follows a Series C investment round of over $190m in November 2021, from global technology investors including Index Ventures and ICONIQ Growth.

Motorway launches new personalisation features to help dealers find right stock faster

With more cars than ever in its daily sale, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace releases new smart features to make it easier to find stock

With up to 1,000 cars a day now going live in its daily sale, used car marketplace Motorway today announced further smart features to help dealers find the vehicles they want faster than ever – including more powerful filtering, saved searches and personalised stock alerts.

Powerful filtering

Motorway has further enhanced stock filtering tools, adding a model filter to enable dealers to pinpoint specific vehicle models they are interested in purchasing. With a choice of over 3,000 models available every week, this enables dealers to get to the right stock quickly.

Saved searches and personalised stock alerts

Motorway’s new personalised stock alerts notify dealers when there is stock on the platform that meets their specific needs.  Dealers firstly save a set of search results, then Motorway’s platform will notify them when matching stock becomes available.  Four different stock alerts can be configured, enabling dealers to set any combination of makes, models, ages, values or vehicle location they are interested in.

Extended daily sales

To allow dealers more time in the day to browse cars that fit their stock profile, Motorway has extended its daily sale hours to start two hours earlier at 8am and finish at 3pm. Motorway has also extended sales to run seven days a week with new Saturday and Sunday sales.

Harry Jones, Founder and Chief Product Officer at Motorway, said:

“While we continue to grow our dealer customer base, we’re also committed to providing the best experience on our platform for existing dealer partners.  We regularly ask our dealers what we can do to make their lives easier – personalisation and more powerful filters are consistently high on their list, so that’s exactly what we’ve delivered with these new features.

“More powerful filtering, saved searches and personalised stock alerts are just three of many features we’re planning to launch this year, in our mission to leverage technology to drive dealers’ business growth – in this case, by helping them find exactly what they are looking for in a fraction of the time.”

The luxury used-cars selling for more than new

Motorway reveals a rise in value of luxury used-cars since the start of 2022

Motorway has seen a rise in luxury used-cars retaining and growing in value, with many selling for more than the cost of a new model. According to 2022 sales data from the used-car marketplace, Porsche tops the list of best investment makes, closely followed by Bentley and Audi.

Whilst previously a new car would lose value once driven off the forecourt, the same may no longer apply for a number of luxury makes and models. In June this year, a Porsche 911 Turbo S sold for £33,056 more than a new car of the same model, delivering a 20% return on the owner’s investment. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is also retaining its value, with one owner recently selling for 4% more than a new model.

The ongoing shortage of semiconductors and other parts has caused delays for manufacturers bringing new cars to market. Now, it’s not uncommon for wait times of 12 to 24 months for high-end cars such as a new Porsche, meaning car dealers are turning to the used car market to find high quality, low mileage cars for their customers.

Alex Buttle, co-founder of online used-car marketplace Motorway said: “Over the last six months, we’ve seen a marked increase in luxury cars achieving unprecedented prices on our platform. It’s a seller’s market, with many luxury cars selling for not far off, or more, than their original retail price when sold as new.”
