Motorway launches innovative new transport offering, improving vehicle appraisal quality, speed and service for their dealers

London, 22nd February 2023Motorway, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, today announced the launch of Motorway Move – an enhanced end-to-end transportation solution for Motorway purchases; improving appraisal quality, speed and service levels. The innovative new transport solution has been designed to significantly improve the post-sale experience for dealers, making the process easier, faster, and more consistent, whilst delivering more value.

Motorway Collect

Motorway Move is powered by two new proprietary technologies, built in-house by the team at Motorway. The first is Motorway Collect, a vehicle appraisal app, which enables more accurate and thorough vehicle appraisals. Motorway Collect will be rolled out to Motorway Move collections from today, driving quality, consistency and transparency in the vehicle collection and appraisal process.

With Motorway Collect, the driver collecting the vehicle has access to the same vehicle profile from the Motorway daily sale. This enables them to compare the vehicle being collected to the original profile, resulting in a faster, more accurate appraisal process.

Motorway Collect also allows drivers to highlight any additional damage, upload photos directly to the app, and conduct a test drive. The purchasing dealer is able to review the vehicle’s full appraisal in Motorway Pro and make decisions on potential negotiations, if needed.

When the transportation is complete, proof of delivery is also submitted by the driver in the Motorway Collect app, giving the purchasing dealer full transparency over the condition of their purchased vehicle.

Designed to drive high quality and consistent appraisals, Motorway Collect provides dealers with peace of mind when outsourcing the collection of their purchases.

Motorway Dispatch

Network planning for Motorway Move will be driven by Motorway’s new transport management system, Motorway Dispatch

Designed to improve the speed and efficiency of vehicle deliveries, Motorway Dispatch drives faster vehicle collections and deliveries, through optimised planning and workforce management. The innovative network planning capabilities will see drivers placed in jobs that are most local to them, reducing wasted travel and supporting faster deliveries and less rescheduled jobs.

For dealers, this will save time and money as they will receive their vehicles faster, reducing days to sale. By streamlining operations, Motorway Dispatch will also reduce defects, such as reschedules, giving dealers confidence that their vehicles will be collected and delivered when expected.

New, more competitive rates

Finally, Motorway Move fees have been reduced by up to 10% when compared to the previous Motorway Transport product, with movements now from as little as £89. This offers dealers a competitive and all-inclusive price, highlighting Motorway’s commitment to delivering more value for dealer partners.

James Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Motorway, said:

“When purchasing used-car stock with Motorway, our dealer partners need an efficient and effective vehicle transport provider. Transportation has been a pain point for many of our dealers and the wider industry, for a number of reasons, including the quality of appraisals, service levels and, of course, price.

“We’ve listened to feedback from dealers we work with and have fully enhanced our transport offering with a suite of new products and more competitive fees. This is a prime example of Motorway at its best – listening to dealer feedback and using smart technology to deliver a best in class experience. Motorway will now deliver more value than ever to our dealer partners, driving quality, consistent vehicle collections and deliveries.”

Dealers can book vehicle deliveries with Motorway Move on Motorway Pro.

Motorway announces sponsorship of ITV’s 2024 Guinness Six Nations broadcast coverage

London, 1st February 2024Motorway, the UK’s fastest growing used car marketplace, has today announced it will sponsor ITV’s broadcast coverage of the Guinness Six Nations, for the third consecutive year.

Motorway’s sponsorship will feature brand new creative idents, featuring one of rugby’s most well known former players and ITV Guinness Six Nations pundits, Lawrence Dallaglio.

The new creative idents dramatise the feeling Motorway sellers have, when they sell their car on Motorway, for more money. The humorous ads feature rugby fans celebrating their highest offer, at times throughout the match when they probably shouldn’t be celebrating!

Click here to watch the idents

In one of four new creative idents, we see a team gathered in the locker room during halftime. The players look tired and downhearted, as they stare at the ground. The coach looks to motivate them with an impassioned speech. A phone ‘dings’ with a notification and we see one player excitedly cheering at his phone. He’s received his highest offer from Motorway, with a prompt to ‘Confirm Offer’. Just as he accepts the offer, we see ITV pundit Lawrence Dallaglio step out from the showers. In nothing but a yellow towel, Dallaglio reports, ‘Oh yeah he’s winning!’ The film ends with “Guinness Six Nations coverage, sponsored by Motorway”.

The sponsorship agreement, planned and brokered by Motorway’s media agency MG OMD, will span 10 live games across ITV’s coverage of the 2024 tournament. The sponsorship kicks off with the first game on 2nd February, France v Ireland and will include a comprehensive activation package, with the whistle to whistle 10 second creative idents before games, during half-time and in post match coverage.

This partnership continues Motorway’s sponsorship of primetime sports coverage, following their sponsorship of TNT Sports’ broadcast coverage of the Premier League for the 2023/2024 season.

Rachael Halliday, Brand Director of Motorway, said: “We’re proud to be sponsoring ITV’s coverage of the Guinness Six Nations for the third consecutive year. As one of the most watched and talked about sports fixtures in the UK, it’s a prime spot for Motorway to be driving awareness and consideration as the definitive way to sell a car for more money.

“This year we’ve created a series of creative idents, which bring to life the celebratory feeling when you sell your car for more money – a feeling shared with rugby fans when their team scores the winning try. With this high reach sponsorship, we hope to help even more car owners sell their cars online for more money, to our nationwide network of thousands of dealers.”

Simon Daglish, Group Commercial Director, ITV said: “2024 is a big year for sport at ITV, and so we can’t wait for the Six Nations tournament next month. We’re delighted to partner with Motorway on such a high calibre sporting event for the third consecutive year.”

Motorway launches new ad campaign

Real Motorway customer stories brought to life in latest campaign from the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace

Friday, 12th January 2024: Motorway, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, has launched a new campaign featuring true Motorway stories, highlighting the key customer benefit of selling a car for more money.

Motorway connects car owners directly with their network of more than 5,000 car dealers. These verified dealers compete to buy each car in an online daily sale, allowing the seller to get more money in the process. For sellers, profiling and selling their car is a 100% online process, with their car collected from home for free. As a result, they get more money and a convenient selling process.

To bring this to life, Motorway’s new campaign features true car selling stories, with the first of two new ads featuring Jen’s story. The TV spot opens with Jen working from home, when her husband video calls to speak with Jen and their daughter. We see the daughter run through her tired and tattered bedroom, to speak to her father on screen. Jen’s husband works away from home, so they decide they no longer need two cars. Jen chooses to sell one of the cars on Motorway, which she’s able to do quickly and easily, all from her phone. When the offer comes through, Jen is shocked and delighted, as she received more money than she expected. Once the finance is paid off, Jen uses the remaining money to surprise her daughter with the bedroom of her dreams, resulting in a win for everyone in the family.

In the second spot, we meet Ian, as he’s called into his manager’s office. After 35 years, he’s been made redundant and finds himself at a crossroads. Whilst considering his next career move, Ian hears a Motorway ad on the radio. After some time, he decides to sell his car on Motorway and is surprised to see the winning bid is far more than he was expecting. Ian uses the money from the sale of his car to buy a van and the tools, to finally take a leap of faith and become his own boss. We see Ian become a sole trader, fulfilling a lifelong goal.

This new campaign builds on Motorway’s previous ‘Dealers Compete’ campaign, which drove understanding and awareness of Motorway’s unique proposition. With significant brand awareness in market, Motorway is now evolving this platform to focus on the customer benefit of getting more money.

In addition to the TVCs, Motorway’s through-the-line campaign includes radio, social and OOH. The campaign was created by Motorway’s in-house brand marketing team, produced by RSA films, directed by Stuart Rideout, with media planning and buying handled by MG OMD. Simon Morris, formerly the Chief Creative Officer of Amazon, was the Executive Creative Director for the campaign.

Rachael Halliday, Brand Marketing Director at Motorway, said:

“Our research shows that for the majority of car sellers, getting the best price is their number one priority when choosing where and how to sell. Motorway’s nationwide network of dealers compete to give their best price, and as a result car sellers are surprised and delighted by getting more money than they expected. While selling a car can be a very transactional experience, the stories behind the wheel are incredibly relatable and moving – cars are a huge part of our lifestyles and finances. With so many of our sellers sharing their positive experiences with us, we knew we had to give these success stories a platform to help other car owners get more money too.

“We’re confident this high-reach campaign will drive greater awareness, and connect with an even wider audience at a time when getting more money is more pertinent than ever. We feel this new campaign will really engage with car owners on a personal level, bringing the Motorway way to sell your car, to life in a more emotional and benefit-led way.”

About Motorway

We connect people selling their car directly with our network of more than 5,000 verified car dealers, matching each seller on our platform with the dealer who most wants to buy their car. We help car owners sell their cars 100% online for a great price in as little as 24 hours, with their car collected from home for free, while supporting our car dealer partners to easily acquire the best used car stock.

Gender pay gap

In 2023, Motorway continued to help thousands of UK car owners to sell their vehicles, quickly, easily and for a great price whilst supporting our network of more than 5,000 dealers to acquire premium, used-car stock.

At the same time, we have continued to focus on cultivating our culture of equality, diversity and inclusion among our teams, and on continuously shaping the company behaviours, processes and policies required to do this.

In 2023, we put in place strategic initiatives to drive more inclusive hiring, in an effort to close our gender pay gap, which included:

  • Conducting a full review of our benefits, with the aim of improving our employee value proposition (EVP) in order to target top female talent. From this review, we  enhanced our maternity offering at the beginning of the year, going even further by expanding the package in October 2023, to six months fully paid maternity leave. Alongside maternity leave, we have introduced a workplace nursery scheme, allowing working parents to pay their nursery fees via salary sacrifice and save on tax. And finally, we have enhanced pension scheme offering.
  • Job levelling across the business, to ensure clarity of standards and expectations at the ‘Head of’ level and above. This new levelling scheme will support Motorway with an unbiased promotion process moving forward.
  • Launching partnerships with Black Girls in Tech and She Can Code in order to advertise all our engineering roles with their networks, through their careers pages and newsletters. In 2023 we made one hire through our partners at Black Girls in Tech and in 2024 will continue investing in the gender balanced engineering teams of the future.

However, like many other tech companies, our gender pay gap continues to be impacted by an ongoing shortage of women in the engineering sector. This inevitably limits the number of female candidates applying for open roles and has led to a gender imbalance at Motorway, specifically in our upper quartile, where 18% of the roles are made up of female talent. This unfortunately means that our mean gender pay gap is higher than we would like, at 21.4%.

What will we do to change this in 2024?

Our purpose at Motorway is to build a better car market for tomorrow, for everyone. This of course means we need to continue to build a pipeline of talented women entering the business, particularly into specialist tech and leadership positions, as well as supporting our existing female employees to develop their careers and progress into more senior roles in the company.

In 2024, we will:

  • Leverage our EVP by communicating the experience of female talent working at Motorway. This will enable us to attract candidates who are a natural fit and value the benefits they’ll receive in return for their skills and experience.
  • Introduce a mentorship programme aimed at supporting female talent at Motorway.
  • Increase our focus on data, which will provide a better understanding of the diversity in our recruitment pipeline. This will allow us to make informed decisions on where to focus our diversity efforts, and ensure an equitable process.
  • Introduce company wide diversity & inclusion training for leaders and managers. Alongside interview training, this training will raise everyone’s awareness of their unconscious biases and this is the starting point to change behaviours. We will then roll out to all our employees.

We will be reviewing our plan to reduce our gender pay gap on a quarterly basis and our hiring plans monthly at executive level, to ensure we remain focussed on taking action and improving over the next 12 months and beyond.

Motorway extend their daily live sale times, to give dealers more time to bid

London, 18th October 2023Motorway, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, today announced it is changing the hours of its daily live sale to enable dealers to start placing bids from 7pm the night before, until 3:30pm the following day.

To date, dealers have been given access to preview the next day’s sale from 7pm which meant they could select and save vehicles that went into the live sale at 8am the following day in advance. However, feedback from Motorway’s dealer partners revealed that they would prefer to have more flexibility to start bidding when convenient for them.

From today, dealers can now bid from 7pm the night before, with the live sale ending the following day at 3:30pm, half an hour later than previously. This change will give dealers more time to bid and make it easier than ever to secure stock when convenient to them.

Dealers can also make the most of Motorway’s proxy bidding feature alongside this new earlier live sale time. Proxy bidding allows dealers to set a maximum bid for a vehicle during the sale, automatically bidding on their behalf in increments of £50 so they can be sure they never overpay to secure a vehicle.

Oliver Grummell, Commercial Director, Motorway, said:

“Thanks to the open and honest relationship we have with our dealer partners, they regularly provide us with valuable feedback on how we can improve their experience. And in turn, we can act quickly to make improvements to our platform to do just that. In this case, it’s extending the hours of our live sale to better suit our dealers’ schedule. We know that some of our dealers like to get ahead and review cars the night before the sale starts. Those dealers have been asking us to enable them to bid the night before as well, so that’s exactly what we’ve enabled. And coupled with our proxy bidding feature, our smart tech can do the heavy lifting for them, without ever over-bidding. This is just one of the ways we are laser-focused on making the dealer experience even better at Motorway.”

The team has launched a series of new products and features in 2023 to further improve the dealer experience for acquiring stock, including Motorway Pay – an industry-first solution that enables dealerson to fund a secure online wallet and then release money to private sellers instantly to complete transactions. Motorway has also introduced other innovations to further strengthen the platform this year, including new service history filters, purchase status tag filters, surfacing mechanical or electrical damage and MOT data. All of these new features help dealers save even more time when acquiring premium, privately owned used-car stock.

London, 11th August 2023Motorway, the UK’s fastest growing used car marketplace, has today announced it will sponsor TNT Sports’ broadcast coverage of the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Motorway launches industry first payments service for car dealers to drive hassle-free online purchasing from private car sellers

  • “Motorway Pay” enables dealers to fund a secure online wallet, and then release money to private sellers instantly once the vehicle is inspected
  • The service handles seller bank details, documentation, clearing of finance and instant payment, drastically reducing admin and accelerating speed of transactions
  • Free solution makes buying from private sellers easier than ever before, especially in high volumes

Motorway, the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, today announced the launch of Motorway Pay – a new solution enabling dealers buying cars on Motorway to fund a secure online wallet and then release money to private sellers instantly to complete transactions. The industry first payment service has been designed to significantly improve the purchasing experience for dealers, making payment for vehicles fast, easy, transparent and secure.

When buying from private sellers, dealers often have a lengthy process to go through on each individual transaction. This includes verifying documentation, setting up a new seller as a payee and handling finance settlement. With Motorway Pay, dealers can now pre-load their wallet prior to vehicle collection and then use these funds to immediately pay for the vehicle, at the click of a button. Motorway Pay takes care of all of the admin of collecting and verifying documents, setting up payees and confirming successful payment for both parties. This reduces wait time at the doorstep for the dealer and the seller; and immediate payment confirmations bring instant clarity and the necessary paper trail for both parties.

Motorway Pay also handles the clearance of outstanding finance. Previously, dealers have had to settle any finance separately to the seller’s payment. With over 30% of privately owned cars on Finance or PCP plans, this is often an added layer of complexity in the buying process. Now this can all be completed in just one transaction, with Motorway handling the settlement statement confirmation, set-up and confirmation of payment to the finance company.

The service is free to dealers buying through Motorway, and includes an assurance policy to provide security to dealers that all payments go to the right place.

Initially soft-launched at the end of January this year with a test group of dealers, over 1,000 payments with a total value of over £20m have already been transacted through Motorway Pay, and the company is now starting to roll out the service to all dealers. Participating dealers in the initial test group have reported big savings in admin and time, and a better overall experience for them and the sellers.

Vlad Radu, Vehicle Procurement and Operations Manager at Carsa, said:

“I’ve used Motorway Pay for over 100 transactions so far and it’s been flawless! Payments are always instant, and sellers are reassured via email confirmation from Motorway. It saves a lot of time for dealers and transport companies. It used to take us about 15 mins per seller and now I’m doing it while on the phone with the driver.”

Over £2bn of purchases have been completed through Motorway in the past 12 months and volumes continue to increase rapidly, with their sales now exceeding 1,000 cars a day on average, including many sales of over 1,500 cars a day in the past few weeks. With this growing volume, making it easy for dealers to buy in bulk has been a major focus for the company.

James Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Motorway, said:

“Simplifying the payments process has been high on our dealers’ wishlist for some time, so we are delighted to be able to launch this industry-first solution with Motorway Pay. Removing the hassle involved with paying private sellers has been a hard problem to solve, but we’ve built a powerful, secure and robust solution that makes buying cars on Motorway in high volumes easier than ever before.

“Having road-tested Motorway Pay in Q1 with a small group of dealers, it’s clear this is a real game changer and a genuine first for the industry. We’re including the service at no additional cost to our dealers – underlining our ongoing commitment to delivering maximum value through technology, and supporting our dealer partners to grow their businesses profitably.

“We’re really pleased that the first phase has been so successful and now look forward to rolling out Motorway Pay across our dealer network.”

Dealers wanting to start using Motorway Pay can apply today to begin the onboarding process, by completing the wait list form here

Leading the charge: London and Nottingham revealed as top EV cities

Used-car marketplace Motorway has today announced the top 10 EV cities in the UK, with London and Nottingham coming out on top. It comes as EV sales continue to rise in the UK, with reports used EV sales grew 44.1% in Q3 2022*.

The UK capital has been named as the city leading the charge on electric vehicle adoption, with EVs representing almost 25% of new and used car sales. It also paves the way with 8,600 public charging points. However, when it comes to charging availability, London ranks at 15, with the ratio of chargers to people standing at 1 to 1,672. Nottingham ranks second on the index, which was compiled by reviewing EV sales data by region, charging point availability and clean air policies of cities and towns across the UK.

With the 2030 electric switchover fast approaching, motorists are making a conscious effort with their car choices. Bedford ranked third for electric-vehicle readiness, following the development of its extensive net-zero strategy and its focus on installing public charging points. Meanwhile, Newcastle upon Tyne has been named as an electric vehicle hotspot with more electric cars sold in 2022 than anywhere else in the UK.

The top 10 electric car cities and towns revealed by Motorway:

  1. London
  2. Nottingham
  3. Bedford
  4. Manchester
  5. Newcastle upon Tyne
  6. Milton Keynes
  7. Bristol
  8. Oxford
  9. Coventry
  10. Southampton

As well as the climate-conscious benefits, there are several economic advantages to electric vehicles that Brits are capitalising on. Not only do they positively impact the environment, but lower running costs are likely one of the top draws to purchasing this fuel type, as motorists can save up to £650 on fuel and road tax** a year, compared to petrol and diesel cars.

Alex Buttle, Co-Founder of online used-car marketplace Motorway said: “While I’m sure most car owners are considering making the transition to an EV at some point, there are several factors at play in the decision. One of those factors is whether or not you live in a city or town which has sufficient charging point infrastructure. We’ve created this comprehensive index to help car owners understand which areas and cities are truly leading the charge when it comes to EV-friendliness. As we look ahead to 2030, we’d love to see this list become more competitive, making it easier and more affordable than ever for car owners to make the switch.”
